ICY CHRISTMAS TREE

How many ways can you engineer a Christmas tree! This icy Christmas tree STEM project was super fun. We had a great time piecing together this icy Christmas tree before it melted. 

 Materials
  1. Different size containers 
  2. Water
  3. Food colouring
  4. Tinsel {optional}


Procedure
  1. Freeze water in each of the containers. 
  2. Mix in green food colouring and add tinsel for a  more festive look. You can also dump in glitter and other Christmas themed objects for melting out later! 
  3. Next, prepare a surface for the icy tree parts. Use a large cookie sheet and put some parchment paper down. A sturdy piece of cardboard could also work. You may want to transfer to a bin after if you want to melt the ice with warm water.
  4. When frozen, remove the ice blocks and get started. You can put on gloves if you want to.
  5. Try squirting a bit of warm water will help set them in place better. This can be tricky, so you have to work on creating a stable base and use your building skills to get your tree lined up!
  6. When you are satisfied with your icy Christmas tree, use warm water to melt the ice!

Aim: To see a reaction between an acid and base. Equipment: Washing up liquid, Vinegar, Cup or glass, Baking soda, Food colouring- Red & Yellow or orange Method: 1 Make sure your volcano is in the kitchen or outside 2 Add 2 tbsp full of baking soda 3 Add 1 tbsp of washing up liquid into the cup 4 Add a few drops of the food colouring 5 Quickly pour in just under a quarter of a cup of vinegar. Results: You will see foam rising/coming out Conclusion: Mixing the acid (vinegar) and the alkali (bicarbonate of soda) and releasing bubbles of carbon dioxide CO2. The washing up liquid is just there to trap those bubbles so it flows over the ‘volcano’ like real lava!

Catapult

The young ones today collaborated and designed in making their catapults. It is not an easy task- there are many ways of making catapults so working on the design was a challenge where the students had to agree on. After the design process, the students built their catapult and started firing their cannons!
